Some cakes over the past couple of months

I've been MIA for a while, all for good reason.  Had another baby in November and then moved to a new state right after Christmas.  I made a couple of cakes during my  pregnancy, but haven't gotten around to posting them so here they are!

My 2nd son's 1st birthday cake!

Gender reveal cake!  This was so fun to make.  My friend had the ultrasound technician put the gender of her baby in an envelope and dropped it off at my house with a bag of blue and pink M&Ms.  She wanted me to fill the center of the cake with whatever color of M&Ms for the baby, and had a gender reveal party.  I was the only one who knew they were having a boy until the cake was cut!  It was such a special way to find out and I am so happy she asked me to make her cake.

Monster High Cake

I was asked to make a Monster High cake. Um...what? I had no clue what Monster High even was. My client sent me over some pictures of ideas for the cake and I instantly got excited. I have a small obsession with skulls, I don't know why, they're cool. So I was happy that I got to make one on a cake. I love, love, LOVE this cake. And, just like my birthday cake, I had 0 problems making it! I don't remember what the flavors are, but I'm sure it was delicious.

Happy Birthday to ME!

I recently turned the big 3-0. I really wanted an 80s themed party and wanted my cake to be a big center piece of the party. Not only did the cake come out perfectly, but I also had 0 problems while making the cake. Seriously. I always have a stressful moment or a mini meltdown when I make a cake because it always happens that something doesn't go according to plan. Not this time. It was great. We celebrated my birthday with friends and family at our house. The cool kids dressed up and the boring ones didn't (just kidding, I love you all). It was a great night and I wouldn't have wanted to ring in my 30s any other way.

Here I am, in all of my 80s glory.

Me and my sister

My mom and me
My husband, a.k.a. Mr. T

Look at my little man.  Can he be any cooler?
And my other little man.  Perfect rock star.

Now to my cake! Let's start with the flavors. Bottom tier is a chocolate chip cake with chocolate chip cookie dough filling. Middle tier is chocolate cake with peanut butter filling. Top tier, which is the boom box, is a funfetti cake with funfetti filling. It was delicious if I do say so myself, and I normally don't eat cake, especially cakes that I make (it's a weird thing I have I guess since I put so much time into them). What you can't see in this picture is the Pac Man scene that goes around the back of the bottom tier. I also have a cassette tape on the right hand side of the middle tier, and a sparkly Michael Jackson glove on the left side of the middle tier. I know I have pictures of them somewhere, so I'll update this if I find them.

Metallica!

I was asked to make a Metallica themed cake for a rehearsal dinner by an old friend from college.  I don't really know much about Metallica, other than the fact that I like a bunch of their songs, so the bride really helped me out with the idea for this one.  We settled on a cake to look like their ninga star.  I love the way it turned out!  The cake is funfetti with a funfetti filling - one of my new favorite flavors!

2nd Birthday Boom!

Once again, there was a boom in cakes in January for all of my son's friend's birthdays.  It was a busy couple of weeks with some other cakes thrown in between the birthday cakes, but I am so happy that I had a lot to make to keep me busy.

I don't feel like writing much, so I'll keep this short and simple. We have a Disney Cars themed cake, a 2 year old train theme, and Elmo!

And of course, I can't forget my little guy's birthday (saving the best for last). We only had a small pizza party with immediate family, so I didn't want to make a big cake. He is obsessed with this cartoon on the Disney Junior called "Special Agent Oso", so that's the cake that he got.  I wasn't sure if I had done the characters properly, especially since I think Oso was a little off, but he loved it and knew what it was right away, and that's all that matters!

Jungle Themed Baby Shower

Another jungle baby shower cake!  This is the first cake I've made since having my baby, so I was very nervous about being a little rusty.  Fortunately, the cake gods were watching down on me and this cake was a breeze.  NOTHING went wrong.  Bottom tier is chocolate and the top tier is vanilla and according to my husband, both cakes are the best I've ever made (he gets to enjoy all the scrap pieces).  And I've now realized that I really need to get back into this, even if it's just making a cake at home.  I think maybe I'll start making some fake cakes, just so I can keep up the pratice.

Disney Princess Cake

I made this a while ago and just never got around to blogging about it because I had a baby and then have just been living very crazy and tiring life of a SAHM of 2u2.  But finally here is the Disney Pricness Birthday cake.  Made this cake for our friends Karen & Dave's little girl's 2nd birthday.  Karen sent me some pictures for inspiration and this is what I came up with.  Before you even ask, yes, the brick or stone, whatever you want to call it, is all done by hand one at a time.  I know there forms and tools to make brick work very, very easy, but this is something that I tried out for a castle cake and really loved the way it looked, so I decided to do it again for the princess castle.  It takes way too long to do, but again, I just love the way it looks!

BAM - Batman Cake

Birthday Batman cake!  This is one of my favorites!  I had so much fun making this cake.  With 2 boys I hope to make many, many more Superhero cakes!

Another Harley Birthday Cake!

I love making repeat cakes!  Why?  Because I've already made it so I know what mistakes to avoid and how to time out my plan properly, which is incredibly important when you have a toddler to chase around while working on a cake.  This cake was for my new sister-in-law's dad.  His birthday was the day of my brother & her wedding, so they asked me to make a special birthday cake for him to have the night of the rehearsal dinner.

Bridal Shower Wine Cake

This is the second wine cake I've made!  This time instead of making the cake look like a barrel, I made it look like a basket via basket weaving with icing.  I tried making an edible wine glass and wine bottle, but it was just not working out so well, so I went with the next best thing - a mini bottle of wine and a small wine glass.  I love the way it turned out.

Tangled!

I have never seen the movie Tangled but apparently there is a pretty popular boat scene in the movie.  Thankfully there is the internet so I could see what this boat scene was all about.  I have to confess that I was going to make the boat and the people all out of gumpaste, but I failed on the people making part.  That is something that I am going to have to keep working on.  Fortunetly Disney sells lots of toys that go along with the Tangled movie and I was easily able to find exactly what I needed for this boat scene and as a bonus, the birthday girl gets to keep the figurines on top.  I also thought of covering the cake in fondant but because it is a really simple design, I wanted to get some texture in there, so I iced the cake in buttercream and did a little wave action, to make it look like water.  If you're wondering what the little yellow things are in the water, they are lanterns, or candles, however you want to look at it.  In the scene they are surrounded by these while on the boat.  I didn't want to have a ton of them hanging because I thought it would look too messy with wires everywhere, so placing them within the waves of the water seemed like the perfect idea.  So Happy Birthday Lindsay!  I hope you enjoy your cake.

Just for fun - a basket of roses

I recently went to a playgroup get together and contributed a cake to the event. I really wanted to make a lemon cake with raspberry filling and figured I could work on my piping skills at the same time. I originally was going to cover the top in roses and then do a scroll work on the side, but I didn't like the way it was turning out so I decided to try out a basket since I've never done one before. I think it came out cute but the best part is that this was pretty tastey.

Very Hungary Caterpillar Cake

The is the last cake of the January baby boy birthday cakes from playgroup.  The theme of the party is based off of the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", and so is the cake.  Happy Birthday Timmy!

Mickey Mouse Cake!

Happy 1st Birthday Chase!  The Mickey hat at the top of the cake is Chase's smash cake!

Winter ONEderland Snowman Cake!

Happy 1st Birthday Eric!  What a perfect theme for a snowy birthday party.  Snowman is made out of rice crispies and the little snowman cake is baby Eric's smash cake.

Winnie the Pooh Birthday Cake!

This was for a playgroup friend's birthday party.  My favorite is the honey pot.

Happy Birthday Ryan!

My little guy turned 1 on December 29th.  It's amazing how quickly a year can fly by.  Seems like yesterday I was holding this brand new, tiny baby and then the next thing I know I'm preparing for his birthday party and making his birthday cake!  We went with a Winter ONE-derland themed party.  I absolutely loved his cake.

Happy Birthday!

Ginger Cake!  Made this for my SIL's 30th Birthday.  It's made to look like her labordoodle Ginger.

This is the first birthday cake I made my husband.  He's a Harley guy.

And the 2nd birthday cake I made my husband.  I don't remember where we got the idea to make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich but I made one.

Coach purse cake.

My husband's 30th birthday cake.  This is probably my favorite.

Grooms Cakes!

Made this for my brother's wedding.  He's a cartographer so I thought this was perfect.

LSU football helmet cake.  First time I've ever tried to make a football helmet.  Good thing my hubby had a mini helmet to help me for inspriation.

E-A-G-L-E-S!  Made this for my friend's wedding!
